ABSTRACT
Delimitation of the modern borders of Armenia and Azerbaijan is the issue where various interests of the countries in the region have crossed. Azerbaijan is striving for the maximum expansion of the borders, ignoring the recognized ones and using the late Soviet maps to join the borderland territories. Turkey supports Azerbaijan aiming at reorienting political and economic relations with Armenia. Georgia is resolving the problem of its security. Iran stands for the status quo of the borders in the region. Russia proposes to have the borderline between Armenia and Azerbaijan settled on the basis of different Soviet territorial maps. The historical format is being recre¬ated – that of the regional Russia-Turkey-Iran dominance with the participation of Azerbaijan and Armenia.
On the whole, there is a struggle of the great powers for the redistribution of spheres of influence in the Transcaucasia, where Western countries strive for establishing themselves and ousting the Russian Federation. In this situation, Azerbaijan expects to receive the borders of the First Republic (1918-1920), which means the reconstruction of the Great Azerbaijan project, and Armenia seeks to stabilize its borders as well as relations with surrounding countries. Iran has its own considerations, regarding the processes that take place around the Armenian-Azerbaijani border as affecting the issue of its security, especially in the Syunik region.
