ABSTRACT
In the article, in parallel with the Orwellian analysis of the reasons for the deterioration of the quality of the English language, some urgent problems of the public functioning of the Armenian language are considered. The reasons for the current almost complete neglect of the state policy in the field of lan¬guage and the emergence of serious obstacles to the full use of the Armenian language, the only state and official language of the Republic of Armenia, are highlighted. Particular attention is paid to the negative impact on the language environment of the public speech of representatives of the highest echelons of power – their repeated violation of the requirements of the "Law on the Lan¬guage of the Republic of Armenia". The most dangerous thing is that, like the ruling party in Orwell’s novel “1984”, which purposefully planted the so-called “doublethink” in the minds of ordinary citizens, the current government in Armenia since May 2018 has been increasingly trying to distort the linguistic world of citizens, putting forward mutually exclusive goals and slogans. Two requirements stand out as the primary tasks for improving the language policy - the restoration of the high status of the for¬mer State Inspectorate for Language (now the Committee on Language within the Ministry of Edu¬ca¬tion, Science, Culture and Sports) and the re-establishment of the Supreme Council of the Armenian Language.
